CBS News berichtete gestern als erster, die USA planten, ihre militärische Präsenz am Persischen Golf mit Beginn des nächsten Jahres auszubauen.

The Pentagon is planning to bolster its presence in the Persian Gulf as a warning to Iran’s continuously defiant government, CBS News reports.

CBS News national security correspondent David Martin says the U.S. military build-up, which would include adding a second aircraft carrier to the one already in the Gulf, is being proposed as a response to what U.S. officials view as an increasingly provocative Iranian leadership.

Military officers say the build-up would take place after the first of the year, not with the aim of actually attacking Iran, but strictly as a deterent.

Abschreckung wogegen? Gegen mögliche militärische Aktionen des Irans?? Oder doch eher eine mehr oder weniger sanfte Drohung, dass die „militärische Option” nicht vom Tisch ist??

Die USS Dwight David Eisenhower ist bereits in der Region – nach offizieller Darstellung zur Unterstützung von Operationen in Afghanistan und im Irak.

Ende Oktober fand zudem eine gemeinsame Übung mit anderen Ländern im Persichen Golf statt, bei der die Kontrolle und Blockade von Schiffen mit Ladung geprobt wurde, die mit Sanktionen belegt sind.

Reuters hat die Geschichte aufgegriffen und noch mal beim Pentagon nachgefragt.

A senior U.S. Defence Department official told Reuters the report was “premature” and appeared to be drawing “conclusions from assumptions.” The official did not know of plans for a major change in naval deployment.

Another U.S. Defence Department official called the report “speculative” and a Pentagon spokeswomen declined to comment.

“Voreilig” ist nicht unbedingt ein Dementi. Zumindest trifft es wohl zu, dass man eine solche Verstärkung plant.

VOA hat ebenfalls gefragt, erhielt aber keine Antwort.

When asked about the reports, Bush administration spokesmen refused direct comment.

At the Pentagon, spokesman Brian Whitman said the navy moves ships when necessary, but does not talk about specific moves, plans and contingencies.

White House press secretary Tony Snow sounded a similar theme.

He said, “We do not comment on tactical moves, reported or otherwise.”
