US Truppen haben heute das iranische Konsulat in Erbil im kurdischen Teil des Iraks gestürmt, fünf Mitarbeiter verhaftet und Computer sowie schriftliche Unterlagen mitgenommen.

US forces raided the Iranian consulate in the Iraqi northern city of Erbil and arrested five of its staff, it was announced Thursday.

After disarming the consulate’s guards and breaking open its gate, the US troops entered the consulate building, reliable sources told IRNA this morning.

After taking some documents and other things of the consulate, the US forces left for an undisclosed place taking with them the arrested staff members, the sources added. (IRNA 1)

Die US Dienststellen machten zu dem Vorfall keine Angaben.

The U.S. military issued a statement saying it had taken six people into custody in the region but did not mention a raid on the Iranian consulate. It declined further comment. (AP)

Das iranische Außenministerium ist empört.

The Iranian embassy in Baghdad has sent a letter to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry protesting the US’ illegal move.

In its protest letter, the Iranian embassy called on the Iraqi government to help obtain the immediate release of its five detained staff. (IRNA 2)

Sollte es sich tatsächlich, wie der Iran behauptet, um ein Konsulat in Erbil handeln, wäre dieser Vorfall ein Verstoß gegen internationales Recht.

Nach der Verhaftung von zwei Iranern kurz vor Weihnachten ist dies die zweite Aktion dieser Art. Nach der Ankündigung von Bush in der vergangenen Nacht, „das Netzwerk aufspüren und zerstören” zu wollen, dürfte es nicht die letzte gewesen sein.
