Es gibt wenig zuverlässige Informationen darüber, wie gut eigentlich die Zentrifugen, die der Iran derzeit installiert, funktionieren. Es wird immer wieder darüber spekuliert, dass die iranischen Wissenschaftler mit erheblichen technischen Schwierigkeiten zu kämpfen haben.

Jacqueline Shire und David Albright vom Institute for Sience and International Security (ISIS) in Washington haben sich deshalb an eine Hilfsrechnung gemacht.

Er hat die Angaben der IAEA, wie viel UF6 (das gasförmige Uran, das zur Anreicherung in die Zentrifugen eingeführt wird) der Iran bis dato verbraucht hat, mit den iranischen Angaben verglichen, wie viel UF6 unter optimalen Umständen in die Zentrifugen eingeführt würde.

In an April 12, 2006 interview, Gholamreza Aqazadeh, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said:

“….Let me explain, something. In the 164 chain [sic], the maximum amount of material that we can feed the system is 70 grams an hour, with a 10 percent product of 7 grams. The product is 7 grams. …. When a series is operating 24 hours you have to multiply 24 by 70 grams. This is the total product of one series….”

Die Mathematik ist auf der Bais von zwei operierenden Kaskaden recht einfach:

We calculate that over a three month period, operating at maximum capacity, each cascade could be fed approximately 150 kilograms of UF6 or 300 kilograms over a six month period. We do not know from IAEA reports how the consumption of UF6 was divided between the two cascades. … [F]ocusing only on the six-month period from August 13, 2006 to February 17, 2007, we can see that the two cascades consumed 100 kilograms, or approximately 22 percent of the UF6 they might have consumed had a single cascade been operating continuously for six months and a second one been operating for three months.

Was folgt daraus?

[T]his estimate serves to illustrate our conclusion that Iran’s centrifuges are functioning, perhaps with fewer technical impediments than previously understood.

Anders formuliert: zu behaupten, nichts funktioniert, wäre bei weitem zu negativ. Zu behaupten, die Zentrifugen laufen problemlos, wäre bei weitem zu positiv.
