Die FT berichtet heute, dass China von seiner ablehnenden Haltung gegenüber neuen Sanktionen gegen den Iran abgerückt sei.

China has for the first time indicated clear support for a new package of United Nations sanctions against Iran, breaking months of deadlock inside the UN security council over how to respond to Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Die Zeitung bestätigt damit Aussagen französischer Quellen nach dem Treffen der P5 + Deutschland am Samstag in Paris. Die Quelle der FT ist ein namenloser „hochrangiger westlicher Diplomat“.

“China’s move is the most significant thing that happened at the meeting,” said a senior western diplomat. “If China had gone on expressing objections to more sanctions, it could have taken us six months to get a resolution approved. But there has been a surprisingly good discussion, and momentum towards a new resolution should develop quickly.”

Zugestimmt haben soll Peking aber einem deutlich entschärften Sanktionsentwurf.

Diplomats involved in the negotiations say the P5 and Germany are close to finalising a resolution that would further hit sectors covered by two recent UN resolutions.

They add there is broad agreement that the new resolution will extend lists of Iranians prohibited from travelling freely and of Iranian companies and banks prohibited from doing business with the international community. …

However, analysts said China would be reluctant to approve any action that would seriously affect its economic interests or reignite conflict in the region. In Beijing, China’s Xinhua state news agency yesterday gave no hint of a change of heart on stronger sanctions.

Gewöhnlich werden solche Kursänderungen in Peking auch eher stillschweigend vollzogen. Dennoch ist dies für mich ein Grund mehr, immer noch ein wenig vorsichtig mit diesen Meldungen umzugehen.

Bislang gibt es auch noch keine Äußerungen aus Moskau. Der russische Vertreter konnte an dem Treffen in Paris nicht teilnehmen.
